Discussion:
A Short Y11?

I have a customer who wants keys duplicated for a bunch of his
Sentry lock boxes. The keyway looks like a Y11 but the blade is
shorter. I can cut down my regular Y11s but I'd rather have the
correct blank. I can't find a short Y11 in the ILCO catalog. No code
on the locks. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could give me the
number/manufacture of a short Y11.

I thought of that too but it seems Sentry sell the cut keys for
between $12 - $25, depending on how fast you want it delivered, so I
don't see much incentive for them to give me the key info, but thanks
for the suggestion.

I went through the ILCO catalog again and found one that works great.
It's an ESP ES8, ILCO 1531.

Sentry still may identify the correct blank for you.
you won't know if you don't ask.

still think it may be a National D8782
just not sure without seeing the keyway.

I probably would have called Sentry but they were closed for the
weekend by the time I got their info. I went through the ILCO
catalog again and found right blank: an ESP E8 / ILCO# 1531. And,
even better, I had 70 that had been on a hooks probably 5 years
without using them. I don't recall buying that many - maybe I got the
breeder stock. Now, if I could only get them for X217s.

Thanks Key. I'll check those two also ( National D8782, ilco #
S1069H) can't have too many alternates.

you're welcome Skip.
the (National D8782, ilco # S1069H) were just a guess
because Sentry has been known to use that keyway.
if its correct?
it is probably the correct blank and the others would be
alternates.
guess it doesn't matter that much these days.
during my apprenticeship back in the early 80's,
I was trained to always use the correct blank when possible.

When I did my apprenticeship in the early 80's my boss used to cut the heads
of the blanks and make me identify them by profile.... makes it so easy to
look at a keway and id a blank these days..... sorry.... well you took me
back to the 80's key...... ;-)

No problem. You got me thinking of filing a brass cube into a ball.

thats not a bad idea..
when I did my apprenticeship.
I had to stamp the keys and stock the shop keyboard.
was asked to examine each key both when I stamped it and
also when I put it on the board.
this was a fairly large shop with a very large keyboard.

personally I like the 70's :-)
